Grateful if anybody can answer this for me.

I am traveling to Canada next month and will be in transit at Chicago airport. Do I need to pass through US Immigration even if I am not actually leaving the airport. If the the answer is yes - approximately how long will the procedure take. Also, do I need to do the same thing on my way back from Canada?

Depending on where you are from, you may or may not need a visa! You should for sure check with the airline company. If you have a machine-readable passport from a visa waiver country, you do not need a transit visa. If not, I do think you need to obtain a visa in advance. You do for sure want to check up with this to avoid any problems in the U.S. If you run out of time, re-schedule your flight to NOT stop in the US. The same goes for the way back. Sam
