I am an American citizen married to a Frenchman. I entered the marriage in good faith about two years ago. In the last year, my husband began to physically and verbally abuse me. In May, I threatened to divorce him if he didn’t stop. At the mention of divorce, the violence ceased. We spent one good month together, and I decided to help him complete form I-751, "Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence". Shortly after the petition was sent in, the violence recommenced, worse than before. My husband now claims that he married me exclusively for the green card. I am in the process of filing for a divorce, and am also considering filing charges with the police. My story appears to be a common one, but in this case it is the CITIZEN, rather than immigrant woman who has suffered from abuse.

My question is whether or not his green card may be revoked for such behavior, despite the fact that he just received it in August, 2007. It is essentially my fault for collaborating to file his petition, nevertheless, I am wondering if domestic violence on the part of the immigrant warrants deportation from the United States.

In any case, you should not be with someone who beats you. You should go to the police and file a report. You should also go to the hospital and have them do a check up on you if the beatings continue. This is important evidence for later. Also, get a divorce lawyer to help you do all the paperwork as it can be somewhat extensive due to the immigration aspect of your marriage.
